Dee Brown - Heap of People
A 1971 gem from the mighty back catalogue of Jewel records. This was the b-side of the more uptempo "Bad Habit" which I don't like so much. "Heap of People" takes a little while to hit its stride but is a rowsing, very churchy number with a strange but powerful ending. Nice bluesy guitar too.
Dee Brown was the same singer who duetted with Lola Grant. He was originally Walter D. Brown.
Joe Tex uses a similar phrase in his song "Heap See, Few Know" so I'm assuming that this is either southern wisdom or an allusion to a gospel song.

Roscoe Robinson - We Got a Good Thing Going
Переглядів 30 тис.13 років тому
Roscoe sang gospel for many years and was well enough regarded to replace the legendary, tragic Archie Brownlee in the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. He went back to church at the end of his career. His uptown soul hit "That's Enough" was a secular highlight but I like him better in this downhome style, on the theme of stolen love, recorded in 1973.
Danny White - One Way Love Affair
Переглядів 30 тис.13 років тому
Allen Toussaint apparently had a special regard for Danny White's singing. Danny's best known tune is Natural Soul Brother, an early New Orleans funk classic. This was the B-side and it is a powerful piece of downhome soul.
Eldridge Holmes - Love Affair
Переглядів 18 тис.13 років тому
New Orleans native Eldridge Holmes had a long career and recorded R&B, soul and funk records. The funky ones are probably the best known. I prefer him in this style though - deep soul.
Joe Tex - She Might Need Me
Переглядів 29 тис.14 років тому
One of the many great things about Joe is the quality of his LPs. 60s and even 70s soul is usually all about 45s and that's generally a good thing, I think. However, this country style number only appeared on the album "Joe Tex Sings... with Strings and Things". Not a famous record - but it should be. The sound quality here is not fantastic unfortunately - I only have this on tape.
Judy Clay - Lonely People do Foolish Things
Переглядів 56 тис.14 років тому
Before she scored some serious hits duetting with Billy Vera and William Bell, Judy Clay had sung gospel and soul for a number of years. This ballad was recorded for Scepter Records of NYC in 1964.
Jarvis Jackson - Something I Never Had
Переглядів 13 тис.14 років тому
A song that owes more than a little something to For Your Precious Love and also Don't Play That Song, but there's nothing wrong with that. Jarvis Jackson was probably from Georgia and this tune came out in 1966.
Ann Alford - If It Ain't One Thing (It's Another)
Переглядів 52 тис.15 років тому
Obscure but powerful singer with a track seemingly penned by her husband, who obviously liked James Brown! The lyrics are worth picking out, especially the adlibs. From 1972.
Johnny Nash - It's No Good For Me
Переглядів 83 тис.15 років тому
Early uptown soul record from Houston's Johnny Nash. His voice is quite something. Of course, he went on to huge crossover success some years later. He also made a worthy attempt to popularise reggae in the US along the way.
Betty Willis - Ain't Gonna Do You No Good
Переглядів 14 тис.15 років тому
Big voiced soul singer who was probably from California. It's a fair guess she learned her stuff in church. This number is from 1968.
Ann Peebles - Breaking Up Somebody's Home
Переглядів 639 тис.15 років тому
Very underrated soul singer who was the queen of Hi records when Al Green was king. There are plenty of great soul records about cheating but not many to match this one from 1971.
All I Need is Some Sunshine in My Life - Dixie Nightingales
Переглядів 169 тис.15 років тому
Stax ran a gospel label called Chalice in the 60s and this was one of their recordings. The musicians are probably Booker T and the MGS. Cut about 1965, it strangely went unreleased until the early 90s. David Ruffin was once a member of the group but contrary to rumour he is not the lead singer here. It was Ollie Hoskins, who led the group from gospel to soul when they became Ollie and the Nigh...
Bobby Womack - Holdin' on to My Baby's Love
Переглядів 31 тис.15 років тому
Like many of Bobby's songs, this owes something to an older gospel tune. This recording appeared on the excellent Facts of Life LP in a medley with a short funky piece called Nobody. Unfortunately my record is a bit scratchy.
The Saints - Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Переглядів 26 тис.15 років тому
Obscure male duo who sound a bit like the Knight Brothers on this very soulful record. Their uptempo number I've Been Taken for a Ride can be found elsewhere and is also excellent.
Arthur Alexander - In the Middle of it All
Переглядів 240 тис.15 років тому
Arthur was very fond of this sad, countryish song - he recorded it at least 4 times. This is the first version, which was probably done about 1962 but stayed unreleased until the 80s.

Got me dancing I bed… alone… having a good time all by myself just remembering this song. Hadn’t heard it in 50 yrs. Love the blues, reminds me of times gone by n all the loves ones gone on ahead. Doesn’t make me sad remembering them. They live on in me n my siblings just as we will Iive on someday 4:02 in our offspring. It has gotten better with time.

@mandabraith… She was the elder and was singing publicly long before Etta James so Etta James must sound like her.

I recall hearing this song at home when I was a little girl precious memories. My daddy dancing. I watched his feet, he told me to stand on his feet and he held my hands . He danced with me. My mother danced too. That man could really dance!! He was my first dance partner. My family loves music. 💖💖💖💖 July 29, 2024

I was.sixteen years old when I first heard this song at a teen party. We would slow dance with girls respectfully and enjoyed ourselves. But the sad thing about hearing this song is all my buddies that shared those good times growing up we cant get together to tell the story because theyve all passed away. So when you hear your old favorite songs enjoy the feeling becasue its just not the same anymore.

He was left handed like Jimi Hendrix and had his own style.. his message was based own real life . His music touched many lives . He will be missed
